King County's Sustainable Purchasing Program is regarded as one of the most innovative and comprehensive for local governments in the US. They optimize both policy and programmatic design to ensure there is leadership buy-in for the program's vision, and the resources and tools needed for staff to effectively implement it.

To help the County implement the program, the County prepared a guide for different purchasing categories and ecolabel recommendations. An ecolabel is a visual cue that a product, service, or company has an environmental certification, which confirms that a product meets a set of environmental standards or a set of desired attributes for that product, service, or company.
